"So Mephibosheth dwelt in Jerusalem: for he did eat continually at the king’s table; and was lame on both his feet".
2 Samuel 9:13

What grace! Mephibosheth was invited to sit at the royal table as the king’s son. He was Saul’s grandson and David’s enemy. He was an invalid with no potential for useful service. Yet seated at the table, his handicap was concealed, and the king could see his face, which reminded him of his dear friend, Jonathan. David showed kindness to Mephibosheth for Jonathan his fathers’ sake. God has shown kindness to us for His Son, Jesus’ sake. Our Saviour has removed the enmity and infirmity so there is no longer a barrier to son-ship or feasting at the royal banquet. What a Saviour! —Milton Haack

In a famous judgement, Lord Denning said “Be you ever so tall, the law is always above you”. Sometimes, we look on our difficulties as insurmountable. We fail to grasp the fact that the One who can remove the mountain into the midst of the sea will help us overcome the obstacles in our lives. Failure to grasp this cost the Israelites 38 years of misery. We must not fall into the same trap. —Brian Russell

Three things does God reserve for Himself: the knowledge of secrets, His own glory, and final vengeance. Our responsibility is to not speculate about things He has not revealed; not accept praise that belongs to Him; and not retaliate against those who, we suppose, have wronged us. As we gather together each Lord’s Day for worship and remembrance, sometimes our worship is silent, particularly on the part of the sisters. At other times it is an audible _expression (from the men) to which all the saints may add a hearty “Amen.” In either case may it truly be an expression from the heart which pleases Him. “Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord” (Ps. 19:14). —Wm. Justified is “to demonstrate or prove to be just or right”. Natural man seeks by his own works to be justified, but God says it is only by grace, faith and blood. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. This is His grace, which is “right” and the outflow of His gracious character. His blood is the “right” foundation, since only the shedding of His blood cleanses from all sin. Faith is our “right” response to His grace and shed blood. Have you been justified? —Tom Steere

"Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth."
1 Timothy 2:4

God loves the whole world (Jn. 3:16). As this verse says, He “desires all men to be saved” (NKJ). No one will be in hell because this is God’s desire. There is no partiality with God. We can go to sinners everywhere and assure them, “God loves you.” And no one will be lost because there was no provision for his salvation. Christ has died, “a ransom for all” (1 Tim. 2:6). There is adequate provision for the salvation of all. Thank God! What an incentive to witness to all and to pray for all! —Donald L. Norbie

What kind of man was the Lord looking for to divulge His inner secrets? It was a man who was faithful to morally command his family well. As a result God funneled down blessing not just to Abraham, but to his whole family for generations. God looks upon a man’s house as an extension of himself—a connection we husbands and fathers cannot disregard without suffering serious damage. C. H. These verses fill us with holy wonder. That the Creator of the universe, should Himself be the subject of the ministrations of His creatures—angels ministering to Him, and strengthening Him. Our finite minds are unable to comprehend the magnitude of this thought, but faith accepts it, and we rejoice to think, that if He—the perfect Man—received angelic support, how much more are we, in our weakness and frailty, the subject of their daily ministrations. —W.
